Proper Tool Selection
The Greenfield Tool Selection Guide will direct the
tool engineer to any number of tools that can mill a given thread. However,
the best tool is any tool that will machine an optimum number of holes
over a given length of time... consistently.
From the Tool Selection Guide, the one formula
to remember for internal threading is never use a tool diameter that
is larger than 70% of the major thread diameter to be produced. This
will insure the tool will not "heel" or rub the flanks of the
thread or interfere with the helix angle of the thread.
